A core childhood memory for Heather was being startled awake by her mother screaming her little sister into this world from down the hall when she was not quite 5. Her baby sister was born during a successful home water birth in the family's never-again-used jacuzzi. After the birth, the attending midwife invited Heather to inspect the placenta with her. Years later, she can still recall her pointing out the veins that fed her baby sister for 9 months and feeling awe-inspired by the process. Older sibling support is an important piece of your birth plan!
Childcare for older sibling(s) during birth either at home or birthing place
Educating older sibling about what is happening to the birthing parent and newborn care (age appropriately/to parent's preference)
